Attractions and Amenities

I must admit that we were quite surprised to discover that the Majorca Tourist Information Service (OIT - Oficines d'Informacio Turistica de Mallorca) have offices in Illetas, although we do strongly suspect that their opening times will be seasonal. These offices can be found at:

The resort of Illetas has a small public beach beneath the low cliffs, which can become very busy during the summer months. Also in keeping with the exclusivity of the town, a number of the hotels here have their own private beaches which are reserved for the use of their guests.

Hippocampes Divers is a PADI approved dive centre that is located on "la solana" beach in Illetas. Open all year round, the centre provides changing rooms, showers and basins for washing dive equipment. During the cooler winter months their classroom is also a good environment to relax and chill out, read a few magazines or have a chat with other divers. For further information and bookings they can be contacted at:

This area of south west Majorca around Illetas is well served with golf courses, the nearest being either Bendinat or Son Vida. An organisation based in Magaluf called "Mallorca Golf Connection", are the official TUI Thomson golf booking agency for the island, and can organise tee-off times, transport to and from the courses and discounted green fees. Nightlife here tends to be quite sophisticated, and mostly hotel based. You won't find clubs with Foam Parties that open to the early hours of the morning, or Karaoke Bars either. Illetas just isn't like that.

There is excellent public transport from Illetas into nearby Palma. The bus service runs every 15 - 20 minutes, but having seen some of the very nice cars that are parked in the resort, I'm somewhat surprised that the bus is ever used.

Other than the everyday basics of life, there are surprisingly few shops in the town, with most visitors appearing to prefer the sophisticated designer label outlets in nearby Palma. Although the city of Palma is the commercial and cultural centre of Majorca, the depth of history, culture and nightlife there often takes visitors by surprise. The easiest way to "see Palma in a day" is by the Number 50 sightseeing bus, which runs on average every 20 minutes throughout the day, and takes in all the major sights of the city. In common with most City Tour buses around Europe, you can hop on and off the bus at any point, and tickets are valid for a 24 hour period. The total journey time for the round trip is 1 hour 20 minutes and costs 13€ for adults and 6.50€ for children under 16. For more information their contact details are:

If you've visited Majorca before, you may recognise that nearby Portals Nous as being the home of Marineland. This is one of the most popular family attractions on the island, and is often included in the major tour operators organised day trips. As a result, it can become very busy during the peak season. Once inside the park you will find performing dolphins, sealions, and parrot shows throughout the day. As far as we are aware these are the only captive dolphins on the island, and frequently we are asked "can we swim with them?". Again as far as we are aware, the answer is sadly no. During the show a number of small children are picked at random to be pulled around their pool in a small inflatable dinghy, but outside of the show times the public are not allowed access to these beautiful creatures. Opening hours are:
April to September: from 9am to 7pm
October to March: from 10am to 6pm
Closed for holidays from 19th of December till 1st of February.

One of the most popular evening attractions with all nationalities in the south of the island is the Pirates Adventure (Els Pirates), which is based on the outskirts of Magaluf. It takes the form of a Dinner/Show with a pirate theme, and has short dialogues in English throughout. The 2007 season commences 29th March and runs through until Friday 26th October, with performances every evening except Saturday, Sunday and Monday. In addition to the familiy show, there is also a special adults only "Pirates Uncut" performance which is held every Friday night.
