Part of the municipal district of Tias, the tiny hamlet of Macher is situated approximately 14km west of the capital Arrecife, and the Arrecife International Airport, and 4km north of the largest resort on Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen. Being primarily residential, Macher has so far remained almost completely "undiscovered" by many of the major tour operators, and as far as we are aware doesn't as yet feature as a recognised destination in any of their summer or winter sun brochures. As a result most visitors here will be independent travellers who either own holiday homes in the area, or are renting such properties from the owners.
Whatever method of transport you ultimately decide upon for this journey, once you have arrived in the village you will very quickly realise that Macher is not a purpose built tourist resort, but a very much a traditional Canarian town where you will always have the feeling of being an invited, but welcome guest, to another way of life. The small numbers of visitors who do make it here are often middle aged, and use the village as a convenient base to see what still remains of the undiscovered Lanzarote, away from the over developed beach resorts and all night karaoke bars along the popular south coast. Macher has a small local supermarket which stocks a surprisingly wide range of goods, although many of the brands may not be instantly recognisable to most British consumers, however for a wider choice, the town of Tias is only a few minutes drive away, and the Centro Commercial Deiland at nearby Playa Honda, is also less than 15 minutes away in a car. The village of Macher could never be described as being lively, and children or young teens would probably be hopelessly bored within 15 minutes of arriving here. However, if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in a tranquil setting, away from the all night neon lit bars and nightclubs, then Macher may be the place for you.
