Playa de las Americas Tenerife

Attractions

Since Costa Adeje became a resort in its own right, the number of tourist information offices that are still truly in Playa de las Americas, has now reduced to the single office in front of the Parque Santiago II apartments. It goes without saying that the staff in these offices are always very helpful, and provide a very useful contact point for the latest information about events and activities in the area. Contact details are:
Oficinas de Informacion Turistica

Nightlife in Playa de las Americas is described in many brochures as being "lively" or "extrovert", which we all recognise as being "tour operator speak", and in recognition of the huge numbers of British tourist that come to here every year, a large number of English style pubs have now opened to target this market, along with clubs and discos which rarely close before dawn. In all fairness most of these clubs are actually centred around a relatively small area of the resort known collectively as The Veronicas, Starco and The Patch. Move a few hundred yards away from this area and you will be totally oblivious their nocturnal activities, and almost guaranteed a good nights sleep. Of the three areas, it's usually Starco that gets busier first, with one of the most popular bars being "Linekers", which is owned by the ex-footballer Gary Lineker, and then managed by his brother. Try to avoid the clubs in the Veronicas until around midnight as they are rarely busy before then. Although The Patch is still very lively, it is however, slightly more geared towards a family audience, and has a number of cabaret bars featuring sound-a-likes of many internationally recognised stars, including Elvis, Elton John and even Roy "Chubby" Brown. Although why you'd wish to fly 2,500 miles to see a Chubby Brown sound-a-like, when you can see the real thing in summer season at Blackpool every year, is really beyond me.

Always assuming that you are awake after a night out at the Veronicas, one of the easiest ways to quickly see a large proportion of the Playa de las Americas is by the mini train that operates from in front of the Colon II Apartments. The round trip takes around 45 minutes and passes through most of the resort before returning via the residential area of Los Cristianos.

Regular street markets are held every Thursday and Saturday morning throughout the year in front of the Hotel Esmeralda in the Torviscas district of Costa Adeje, and also every Sunday morning at nearby Los Cristianos. Every person entering these markets will have to run the gauntlet of innumerable timeshare touts attempting to lure you to their development with offers of free car hire, free holidays or even cash rewards. Just smile, keep walking, and say no, and they'll soon move on to the next likely candidate. Once inside the market it usually takes around 1.1/2 to 2 hours to see everything, although to secure the best bargains you will have to haggle with the traders. A couple of words of advice, do not start to negotiate if you have no intention of buying, but do not be afraid to say no and walk away if the prices do not fall to a level that you are prepared to pay for an item. Common sense we know, but still easy to forget.

Moving around the south west coast of Tenerife by public transport is also fairly easy for those people who do not wish to hire a car whilst they are on holiday. A very reliable bus service is operated by the Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife throughout all of island. The cost of a one way ticket to nearby Los Cristianos is around 60p per person, with buses running every 15 -20 minutes.
